Le CCB propose un cadre pour l\u2019engagement de b\u00e9n\u00e9voles \u00e0 tous les niveaux d\u2019un organisme, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire dans des postes du leadership, de service direct et virtuels.<\/p>\n<p>Tous les organismes sont encourag\u00e9s \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 leur strat\u00e9gie de mobilisation des b\u00e9n\u00e9voles.<a href=\"https:\/\/benevoles.ca\/content\/code-canadien-du-benevolat-2012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T\u00e9l\u00e9chargez le Code canadien du b\u00e9n\u00e9volat<\/a> pour \u00e9valuer votre programme de b\u00e9n\u00e9volat.<\/p>\n<h4>Contexte et but<\/h4>\n<p>B\u00e9n\u00e9voles Canada a lanc\u00e9 le CCB en 2001. En 2012, il l\u2019a r\u00e9vis\u00e9 afin de mieux refl\u00e9ter le contexte du b\u00e9n\u00e9volat d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui. Le CCB a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7u de fa\u00e7on \u00e0 s\u2019adapter \u00e0 toute situation. Il vise \u00e0 r\u00e9pondre aux besoins des organismes de toute taille et de toutes les collectivit\u00e9s canadiennes. M\u00eame un organisme qui compte un seul membre peut appliquer le CCB, \u00e0 l\u2019instar des organismes nationaux dont le personnel travaille \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle du pays.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Le CCB aide les organismes comme suit :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>description des valeurs et des avantages de l\u2019engagement b\u00e9n\u00e9vole;<\/li>\n<li>cadre de discussion et de prise de d\u00e9cision au sein des organismes;<\/li>\n<li>promotion de l\u2019importance de l\u2019engagement b\u00e9n\u00e9vole qui r\u00e9pond aux besoins de l\u2019organisme et des b\u00e9n\u00e9voles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ensemble, ces composantes incitent les organismes \u00e0 \u00e9valuer la fa\u00e7on dont ils travaillent avec leurs b\u00e9n\u00e9voles. Le CCB a pour but d\u2019am\u00e9liorer l\u2019engagement b\u00e9n\u00e9vole d\u2019un oc\u00e9an \u00e0 l\u2019autre.<\/p>\n<h4>Le contr\u00f4le<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/volunteer.ca\/audit\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Le contr\u00f4le<\/a> en-ligne pour le CCB, exclusivement pour nos membres, fournit aux organismes l\u2019occasion d\u2019\u00e9valuer la mani\u00e8re dont ils incluent les b\u00e9n\u00e9voles et de rep\u00e9rer des possibilit\u00e9s de s\u2019am\u00e9liorer. By using their words and their language, it bridges the gap between the culture they know and the one that now surrounds them to inspire newcomers to get involved. <strong>How can your organization make volunteering more accessible for newcomers?<\/strong> Debbi has some tips for you to consider during the application and intake steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Create a simplified volunteer application for newcomers.<\/strong> It should contain the core information you need but with less details. A complex intake form can feel overwhelming for people who are not familiar with our processes. <a href=\"https:\/\/volunteergreatermoncton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Volunteer-Application-Form-for-Newcomers.pdf\">See the sample form by the Volunteer Centre of Southeastern New Brunswick<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Arrange a meeting.<\/strong> Take the time to meet with the newcomer face to face. It acts as an informal interview (the word \u201cinterview\u201d can be intimidating for newcomers). The meeting usually uncovers many skills and expertise that might not be listed on their application form!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Debbi noted that while many are looking to practice either French or English or to use their skills while they look for employment, the majority of those who decide to volunteer also want to fill a need in the community. To help them, here are some of her approaches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Capture as much information as possible from the Newcomer about their goals, and what they hope to achieve with their volunteer engagement. This helps direct volunteers to opportunities that build on their strengths, interests and goals.<\/li>\n<li>Help newcomers develop their volunteer profile that outlines the skills and experiences they want to share and send it to the organization where the volunteer will or would like to volunteer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another common hurdle to newcomer involvement, is screening and more specifically, background checks. It can be hard to know how to appropriately screen newcomers who want to volunteer, especially if they will engage with a vulnerable group. There might be rigid organizational policies or requirements that make it difficult for newcomers to volunteer. We don\u2019t want to skip those verifications though; we must do our due diligence to ensure the safety of those we serve.\u00a0<strong>Background and reference checks should not be used on their own to assess a volunteer\u2019s suitability for a role, they should be used in combination with other screening tools.<\/strong> MOSAIC, a settlement organization in British Columbia, developed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mosaicbc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/A-Guide-to-Developing-Effective-Culturally-Inclusive-Volunteer-Programs_0.pdf\"><em>Capturing the Talents of Newcomer Volunteers: A Guide to Developing Effective, Culturally Inclusive Volunteer Programs<\/em><\/a>\u00a0which goes into detail on all aspects of engaging with newcomer volunteers.\u00a0<strong>They caution that organizations cannot expect recent immigrants to provide a criminal record check from before their arrival in Canada.<\/strong>\u00a0Here are some of the tips and alternatives they provide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be sure to explain to the newcomer the need for, and the process of, criminal record checks, health and reference checks.<\/li>\n<li>Provide letters of request for health checks and criminal record checks that newcomers can take to the doctor and the police respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Accept non-traditional references such as a landlord, an ESL teacher, or a settlement worker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that Permanent Residents and other immigrants are thoroughly screened for criminal inadmissibility before they come to Canada. There may be alternative verifications that a newcomer can provide instead of a traditional criminal record check. Ask them to contact their immigration officer or settlement agency to see if there is an available alternative or offer to reach out to them with the newcomer\u2019s permission. We should always do our best to match a volunteer to an appropriate role and provide newcomers with equivalent support provided to other volunteers. That might mean assigning a mentor or a \u201cbuddy\u201d for a skilled volunteer that needs support to develop their language skills or providing training for a volunteer with the necessary language skills but who lacks another skill needed for the role. Sometimes, a volunteer isn\u2019t a good match for your organization, or you can\u2019t accept them for other reasons despite your best efforts to accommodate their situation \u2013 and that\u2019s okay. Avoid simply refusing the newcomer as a volunteer. Rather, refer them to another organization in the community where they could volunteer or to a volunteer centre that can help them in their search. If possible, connect them with another person that can support them. Being left to their own devices to find another opportunity can leave a newcomer feeling overwhelmed or set aside. Whereas feeling supported and valued as a volunteer (even if it\u2019s for another organization) empowers them to keep looking for a role that will fit their needs and help their community. To fulfil our missions, we need to meet people where they are so we can move forward together. For our organizations to reflect the communities we serve, volunteer programs must do the same.
