Canadian Red Cross | Croix-Rouge canadienne

DESCRIPTION
Region: Flexible/Various locations across New Brunswick

Application deadline: February 01, 2019

The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking Mapping Volunteers for the Canadian Operations department. The Canadian Red Cross (CRC) seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering in Canada and around the world by responding to disasters, building safer, more resilient communities, and educating future humanitarians. Within Canada there remains significant parts of the country with little to no geospatial information is available. Using the Missing Maps methodology, the CRC aims to engage and map remote and vulnerable communities within Canada to better respond to crises affecting the area with more detailed maps and data.

The CRC is seeking a pool of Mapping Volunteers to support a variety of GIS needs and activities. Reporting to the GIS Coordinator, the Mapping Volunteers will be responsible for supporting and hosting mapathons in support of the Missing Maps project, improving the quality of crowd-sourced geographic data, and may be asked to create basic mapping products to support emergency response activities when necessary. During emergency operations, volunteers may be embedded into provincial response structures and report to the Information Management Supervisor. Volunteers who do not wish to deploy in person or remotely may be requested to backfill other operational information management staff as required.

Train individuals to map and provide a follow up after events to continue to engage the participants.
Actively engage in social media following Red Cross guidelines and take photos of events to support Missing Maps.
Improve data quality by implementing validation techniques.
Work closely with the GIS Coordinator to plan events and receive access to resources and support when needed.
Create basic mapping products using data collected from CRC mapathons using a variety of different GIS applications including QGIS, ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite and other applications as appropriate.

RESPONSIBLITY 2: Support to Disaster Response and/or Business Continuity
During an emergency event, volunteers may be asked to contribute IM/GIS expertise to the operation and may be asked to deploy either in person or provide remote assistance. Volunteers may also be asked to backfill other IM/GIS staff as required to ensure continuity of other IM/GIS activities.
During an emergency event, IM/GIS support may include but is not limited to:
