We are in imminent need of volunteers for a regional sports competition that will take place on February 1 and 2, 2025 at the Arthur J. Leblanc Arena in Dieppe. The Atlantic Speed Skating Competition usually has enough parent volunteers but with the installation of new equipment, we need a dozen additional people to come and help with the smooth running of the competition. We will welcome about a hundred skaters from the Atlantic provinces. Our new equipment is a machine to record the times of competitors through transponders placed on the skaters’ ankles. So we need help to properly place the transponders at the ankles under the guidance of parents from the sport.

We also need people to do the timing manually too (2nd backup to record the times with the photofinish), runners to do multiple tasks, in the kitchen to help feed, prepare coffee and snacks for our 70-80 volunteers on site, and other places during the competition (e.g. people who are comfortable skating can help on the ice to put water between the passages of zambonie on the skaters’ track and ‘patching’ holes at the request of officials). We have this regional competition but also we have been accepted as a host to hold the Eastern National Speed Skating Competition for 11-13 year olds on March 22nd and 23rd. So the opportunity can continue with this event for people who want to give their time.

The regional competition is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with the sport and what the tasks entail and then be more ready for the national competition which welcomes young people from the provinces of ON, QC, NB, PEI, TN, NE and Nunavut (120 skaters). The competition starts at 7:30 am on Saturday and Sunday. The days end after the races have elapsed (usually around 4-5pm on Saturday and 3pm-4pm on Sunday). We also have a lot of young people who help us, either brothers and sisters of skaters or former skaters who don’t skate competitively. So it’s a great opportunity for high school students, for university/college students or adults. We look forward to discussing this with you further. My email is sandrine.mallais@gmail.com. My email can be used to solicit your volunteers.

Thank you very much, we are short in our research and the stress is starting to mount to ensure the smooth running of the event.
